In 1955 Rich Robson bought a 1946 Dodge step van for $550. Spending another $500, he and his dad converted it into one of St. Louis' first food trucks. In 1957 Rich enlisted in the Army in the 32nd Infantry. He went through 6 months of training and was released home as a lifetime member of the National Guard.
In 1960 Rich married Joyce, the love of his life, and recently celebrated their 56th anniversary. They had their first daughter, Diane, in 1961. Right after that Rich received a letter that he was going to be deployed in 10 days.
Returning home in 1962 to North St. Louis with his wife and daughter, Rich had one thing on his mind - the food truck. That's when his dream took off. With 1 of only 3 food trucks in the St. Louis area, "Hot Dog Johnny", "Peter & Maria's" and Rich's truck "Dick the Diner' it was fast paced. Rich was always running to his loyal-waiting customers at General Motors, Rexall Drugs, Jefferson Cement and Carter Carburetor to name a few. Rich was a one-man operation. While driving from business to business Rich would have burgers simmering on the grill. At red lights he would hop in the back and flip the burgers in anticipation of the long lines waiting for him.
In 1963 Rich and Joyce had their second daughter, Karen. This completed their family.
In 1981 Rich sold his truck and bought a drive thru pop-in-store in Moline Acres. His following continued with cars wrapping around the building from open to close to get one of his famous burgers, selling out of over 300 pounds of meat a day. Rich became known as "Pops" in the local community, always smiling and giving suckers to the kids and treats to the dogs in the car. Rich had a passion for serving people with the freshest, finest ingredients, always cooking to order with meat bought fresh, never frozen, every morning.
With over 3 million burgers sold you can see everyone appreciated his passion and belief. Now in 2016, at 82 years old you can still catch him behind a grill at one of the new locations in Steelville or Brentwood, MO, stackin 'em high.
We Would Love To See You!
